Tackling Fuel Poverty in Barking & Dagenham: A Community-Led Approach
This Impact Report shares how we tackled fuel poverty by delivering practical support, fostering social connections, and improving access to health and energy resources for vulnerable residents.
The Cadent Foundation-funded project, led by us, aimed to address the pressing issue of fuel poverty in Barking and Dagenham, where one in five households struggle to heat their homes. This initiative brought together local partners—including community organisations, the local authority and GPs—to co-create community-led solutions for residents vulnerable to cold-related health issues.
Through events, practical support and collaboration with residents, the project delivered fuel vouchers, essential items like air fryers and duvets and connected households to vital resources such as grants, benefits advice and community activity groups. Steering groups with engaged residents helped shape creative and accessible events, fostering stronger community connections while improving energy efficiency awareness and access to health services.
The project highlighted unmet needs, such as residents without stable housing or access to basic necessities, and demonstrated the power of collaborative, locally tailored solutions. The initiative achieved measurable outcomes, including improved financial stability, better health management, and increased social connections, with 87% of attendees reporting greater knowledge of available services.
By showcasing the value of community-driven approaches, this project offers valuable lessons for tackling fuel poverty while promoting long-term health and well-being.
